The Tale as Old as Time

Cultural historian Tom Harrington on paradox, power, and the necessity of finding beauty in dark times

In this episode, I speak with Tom Harrington, Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College and Fellow at the Brownstone Institute. Tom has a rare gift. He places current events in historical context in a way that makes the chaos feel a little less chaotic and a lot easier to navigate. We talk about linear time as a limiting cultural trap, the ancient playbook behind divide-and-rule, and why seeking beauty might be one of the most important things you can do amidst the madness.

This conversation was recorded before the recent strikes on Iran and the ensuing chaos in the region. Even though we don’t speak specifically of this conflict, Tom’s take on how the world works feels especially relevant right now.
